AS 1922-1976

This Standard specifies layouts for the alphanumeric area of QWERTY type keyboards implementing the 95 graphic characters of the Australian standard 7-bit coded character set specified in AS 1776. Layouts are provided conformiing to the requirements of AS 1659 for keyboards having 47 and 48 keys and procedures are given for deriving layouts for keyboards having 44, 45 or 46 keys, implementing restricted character sets. The pairing of the characters and their allocation to certain keys is specified. The pairing rule follows the principle of simple bit inversion, such that when considering the code combinations corresponding to the graphics, the characters given in the code table in clomns 2,4 and 5 are paired with those of the corresponding lines of columns 3,6 and 7 respectivesly. Full bit pairing is possible only with the 48-key layout. The layouts specified are concerned only with nominal relative positions of the keys. Physical factors such as key spacing, keyboard slope, shape and size of key tops of the space bar are not defined nor is the way in which the keys are labelled. Key position numbers are shown only for reference purposes.
