1.1 This practice provides a methodology for assessing the relative sustainability of products, processes or projects involving energy and chemicals derived from biomass.

1.2 These assessments will facilitate informed decisions, leading to more sustainable outcomes.

1.3 This practice provides a methodology that includes setting goals and objectives, identifying the appropriate context and selecting appropriate indicators that ensure comparable, equivalent and replicable assessments of relative sustainability where at least one option is available from biomass.

1.4 The objectives of this practice are to reduce bias and distortion in the marketplace, facilitate fair comparison of options, focus on assessments reflecting stakeholder priorities, and support continual improvement for more sustainable outcomes.
