The UK built environment sector traditionally sees value in financial terms, or at best in terms of cost and quality. BSI Flex 390 v.1.0:2022-06 is the first version of a new Flex standard designed to help with considering value in terms of four different pillars: natural, human, social and produced. Complementary to existing processes and systems, and sponsored by the government's Construction Innovation Hub, it can help users make value-based decisions that drive better social, environmental and economic outcomes.

NOTE: This BSI Flex is complementary to existing processes that assist with the wider management process of a project or programme, such as outlined in BS 12973. As a BSI Flex standard, it allows for iterative modification as processes develop, lessons are learned and practical experience is gained. This iteration - Flex 390 Version 1 - focuses on the value-based decision making process, and its breadth and technical detail. Version 2 will resolve connections to existing standards, in part based on feedback derived at public comment phase.
