Scope

1.1 This Standard applies to newly produced, outdoor cooking specialty gas appliances (see Clause 3), hereinafter referred to as appliances, constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials. Appliances submitted for examination under this Standard are classified as portable or stationary. These products are not intended for commercial use.

1.2 This Standard applies to recreational vehicle gas grills (see Clauses 1.4(e) and 3) mounted to the exterior of a recreational vehicle for connection to the recreational vehicle's low pressure LP gas supply system (see Clause 1.5). It does not apply to appliances for installation in the interior living space of a recreational vehicle.

1.3 This Standard does not apply to a fryer/boiler and smokers for installation in or on a recreational vehicle. This Standard does not apply to appliances for installation in or on a boat.

1.4 An appliance may be a:
a) fryer;
b) boiler;
c) smoker;
d) table top gas grill incorporating an open top broiler, top burner(s), griddle, or any combination. A table top gas grill is not a built-in type;
e) combination of any of the above; or
f) recreational vehicle gas grill.

1.5 Appliances may be for connection to:
a) a fixed fuel piping system; or
b) a self-contained liquefied petroleum gas or propane gas supply system of a single cylinder with a maximum size of 20 lb (9.1 kg) of fuel.

1.6 This Standard applies to appliances operating at inlet gas pressures not to exceed ½ psi (3.5 kPa) for connection to a fixed fuel piping system for use with:
a) natural gas;
b) manufactured gas;
c) mixed gas;
d) liquefied petroleum gases; and
e) LP gas-air mixtures.

1.7 This Standard also applies to appliances designed for connection to a self-contained LP gas and propane gas supply systems (see Clause 4.4):
a) operating at regulated outlet pressures not to exceed 1 psi (6.9 kPa); or
b) operating at regulated outlet pressures in excess of 1 psi (6.9 kPa) but not greater than 10 psi (69 kPa).

The construction of appliances for use with the above mentioned gases is covered under Clause 4. The performance of appliances for use with the above mentioned gases is covered under Clause 5.

1.8 Throughout this Standard gauge pressures are designated in pounds per square inch (psi) and kilopascals (kPa). Use of the terminology "psig" is not used. Where "psi" is used, it is understood to be pound per square inch gauge. Absolute pressures are not used in this Standard.

1.9 If a value for a measurement as given in this Standard is followed by an equivalent value in other units, the first stated value is to be regarded as the specification. (Also, see Clause 8.)

1.10 Annex A contains the LP gas cylinder label.

1.11 Clause 7 contains provisions that are unique to the United States.

1.12 Clause 8 contains provisions that are unique to Canada.

1.13 Clause 2 contains a list of standards specifically referenced in this Standard, and sources from which these reference standards may be obtained.

1.14 An appliance covered by this Standard need not to comply with the provisions of the Standard for Gas- Fired Appliances for Outdoor Installations, CAN1-2.21.

1.15 In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
