Preface
This is the eighth edition of CSA/ANSI Z21.5.1 • CSA 7.1, Gas clothes dryers, volume I, type 1 clothes dryers . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2017, 2016, 2015, 2006, 2002, 1999, and 1995. The following are the major changes to this edition: a) corrections to errors in unit nomenclature; b) addition of Annex B; c) testing added using nichrome wire; d) update of references to mobile home applications; e) addition of hot coil ignition testing; and f) updates to the limitations on testing at altitudes. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Z21/CSA Joint Subcommittee on Standards for Gas Clothes Dryers, under the jurisdiction of the Z21/83 Technical Committee on Performance and Installation of Gas Burning Appliances and Related Accessories, the Technical Committee on Gas Appliances and Related Accessories, and the Strategic Steering Committee on Standards for Fuels and Appliances, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committees and the Interprovincial/Territorial Gas Advisory Council. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. This Standard has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard.
Scope
1.1 This Standard applies to newly produced Type 1 clothes dryers, hereinafter referred to as "dryers", constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials: a) for use with natural gas; b) for use with manufactured gas; c) for use with mixed gas; d) for use with propane gas; and e) for use with liquefied petroleum (LP) gas-air mixtures. This Standard applies to dryers for installation in buildings, including manufactured homes and park model trailers.
1.2 Clauses 7 and 8 include coverage for electrical equipment, wiring, and accessories built in or supplied for use with the dryer.
1.3 Clause 7 contains provisions that are unique to the United States.
1.4 Clause 8 contains provisions that are unique to Canada.
1.5 All references to "psi" throughout this Standard are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
1.6 Special construction provisions applicable to a clothes dryer designed for use with an optional approved conversion kit are outlined under Annex A (see Clause 4.22.12).
1.7 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
1.8 In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
