Preface
This is the fourth edition of ANSI Z83.7 - CSA 2.14, Gas-fired construction heaters . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2017, 2011, and 2000. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Z21/CSA Joint Subcommittee on Standards on Construction Heaters, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Performance and Installation of Gas Burning Appliances and Related Accessories and the Strategic Steering Committee on Standards for Gas Appliances and Related Accessories, and had been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. This Standard has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard.
Scope
1.1 Applicable equipment
1.1.1 Specific heaters This Standard applies to newly produced, direct-fired and indirect-fired construction heaters, hereinafter referred to as heaters, constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials and primarily intended for temporary use in heating buildings or structures under construction, alteration, or repair. Products of combustion generated by direct-fired heaters are vented into the area being heated, whereas products of combustion generated by indirect-fired heaters are vented to the outdoors. Direct fired heaters may be installed indoors and optionally outdoors. Indirect-fired heaters may be installed indoors, outdoors, or both. Direct ground thawing heaters are for outdoor use only where heat is directed into the ground. The requirements of this Standard cover heaters with rated inputs up to and including 10 000 000 BTU/h (2930 kW).
1.1.2 Connection to ducts This Standard applies to self-contained heaters with or without integral means for air circulation and may be intended for connection to ducts. If a heater is designed to be utilized with ductwork, the heater is to be tested with the ductwork recommended by the manufacturer or at the maximum static pressure specified by the manufacturer.
1.1.3 Universal construction heaters This Standard applies to universal construction heaters (see Clause 3).
1.1.4 Fuel types for heaters This Standard applies to heaters for use with the following fuel types: a) natural gas; b) propane gas in the vapour phase; and i) propane gas in the liquid phase when the heater incorporates an integral vaporizer that meets the requirements outlined in Clause 6.7; and ii) meets all requirements for heaters for outdoor use outlined in Clause 5.19.
1.2 Non-applicable equipment This Standard does not apply to heaters employing a flameless catalytic combustion process. This Standard does not apply to heaters for use with liquid-phase fuel gases, except when the heater is for use with liquid propane and incorporates an integral vaporizer as outlined under applicable fuel types in Clause 1.1.
1.3 Accessories All accessories intended for use with gas-fired construction heaters certified to this Standard are for testing on the heater in which they may be used.
1.4 Items unique to Canada Clause 8 contains requirements that are unique to Canada.
1.5 Items unique to the United States Clause 9 contains requirements that are unique to the United States.
1.6 Formula for calculation of input Annex A outlines the rate calculation procedure necessary for measuring the gas input of a gas heater using a positive displacement type gas meter.
1.7 High altitude Annex B outlines special construction provisions that are applicable to a gas-fired construction heater designed for use with an optional listed high-altitude conversion kit.
1.8 Fuel conversion Annex C outlines special construction provisions that are applicable to a gas-fired construction heater designed for use with an optional listed conversion kit.
1.9 Standard references Clause 2 contains a list of standards specifically referenced in this Standard and the sources from which these reference standards may be obtained. Annex H contains a list of standards and glossary of terms which provide value to the overall subject matter but are not listed in this Standard.
1.10 Pressure references All references to psi throughout this Standard are considered gauge pressure unless otherwise specified.
1.11 Measurement units This Standard contains SI (metric) equivalents to the yard/pound quantities, the purpose being to allow the Standard to be used in SI (metric) units. IEEE/ASTM SI 10 or ISO 80000-1 is used as a guide in making metric conversion from yard/pound quantities. If a value for a measurement and a corresponding value in other units are stated, the first stated value is regarded as the requirement. The given corresponding value may be approximate. If a value for a measurement and a corresponding value in other units are both specified as a quoted marking requirement, the first stated unit, or both, are provided.
1.12 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
