Preface This is the first edition of CSA PLUS 1200, Guide to energy efficiency compliance, verification, and ratings for water heaters. This Guide was developed with reference to (a) the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association.s Procedural Guide for Residential and Commercial Water Heater Efficiency Certification Programs; and (b) the U.S. Department of Energy.s .Sampling plan for enforcement testing. (10 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 430, Subpart F, Appendix B).
1 Scope 1.1 This Guide specifies verification methods for compliance with the Government of Canada.s Energy Efficiency Regulations (referred to in this Guide as the EE Regulations) as well as methods for establishing energy efficiency ratings for water heaters. This Guide is aimed at certification bodies that have been accredited to administer verification programs, at dealers and manufacturers, and at other organizations and businesses that consider the energy efficiency of water heaters. It specifies criteria and methods related to the compliance, verification, and rating of water heaters, including testing, analysis of test results, retesting, sampling, and reporting.
1.2 This Guide applies to (a) gas-fired storage water heaters that have an input rating less than or equal to 21.98 kW (75 000 Btu/h) and a storage capacity of 76 to 380 L (20 to 100 US gal). Gas-fired storage water heaters are to be tested in accordance with CAN/CSA-P.3; (b) oil-fired storage water heaters that have an input rating less than or equal to 107 000 kJ/h (104 100 Btu/h) and a storage capacity less than or equal to 190 L (50 US gal). Oil-fired water heaters are to be tested in accordance with CAN/CSA-B211; (c) electric storage water heaters that have a storage capacity of 50 to 454 L (11 to 100 imperial gal). Electric water heaters are to be tested in accordance with CAN/CSA-C191 to determine standby heat loss (in watts); and (d) gas-fired instantaneous water heaters that have an input rating greater than 14.65 kW (50 000 Btu/h) and less than 58.61 kW (200 000 Btu/h), are designed to deliver water at a controlled temperature of less than 82 C (180F), and have a storage capacity of less than 7.57 L (2 US gal). Gas-fired instantaneous water heaters are to be tested in accordance with CAN/CSA-P.7. Note: The most recent edition of CAN/CSA-P.7, including all amendments published thereto, should be consulted for the most up-to-date input rating limits.
