Globally networked multimedia applications impose distinct quality of service (QOS) requirements on the local area network (LAN) infrastructure. These applications, which integrate video, audio, and data services, allow for real-time interactive communication between peer entities, requiring the network to provide essential QOS attributes (i.e., guaranteed bandwidth, delay and delay variation, latency, and reliability). Furthermore, to enhance the workera??s productivity in the global workplace, the LAN has to provide for interoperability with the wide area network (WAN).
